Competitive Awards

In this section you will find a number of resources for finding and applying for nationally-competitive awards. IU has a strong and successful record of recipients of nationally-competitive awards which provide funding for a range of activities such as:

  • Gaining invaluable research experience during the summer via the NSF's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) award.
  • Obtaining advanced language instruction during the summer with a Critical Language Scholarship.
  • Teaching after graduating through the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant program or domestically with a Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship.
  • Attending graduate school in the United Kingdom with a Marshall, Rhodes or Gates Cambridge Scholarship or in the US with a Truman Scholarship.

These are just a few examples of the many opportunties. To see how this site is organized, hover over the 'Competitive Awards' tab in the top right of the page. The first page is a list of awards administered by IU offices where you will find detailed descriptions of higher profile awards (Rhodes, Goldwater, Fulbright.....) and contact information for faculty and administrators on campus designated as representatives. Our General Advice and FAQ page is a good place to start for those in the exploratory stage. It includes a slide presentation about finding and applying for awards at Indiana University that we use in presentations we give in the spring semesters. The List of Competitive Awards provides an excel file that you can save and sort to meet your needs. It has of over 100 awards and we update it on a regular basis, adding new opportunities and inserting deadlines when they are announced. There are a number of events throughout the academic year such as workshops, campus visits by representatives from award agencies and information sessions.

Preparing an application for a nationally-competitive award is a multi-faceted exercise - academic, personal and professional. In many ways it is like applying for a job, auditioning for a part or trying out for a team. If you prepare and put your best foot forward you will only gain from the experience!

Our office is available to assist you at any time, whether you are just beginning your search or putting the final touches on an application. The best way to reach is is to send us an email at: iucare@indiana.edu  and someone will get back to you within a day. You can also find us on Twitter at IU_CARE where we follow national and international agencies, events and relevant stories.
