NCUR 2017 Travel Competition

 

The office of Engaged Learning is sponsoring a competition for an all-expense paid trip to the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) in Memphis, TN from April 6-8, 2017. NCUR promotes undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activity in all fields of study including the humanities and visual and performing arts. The approximate value of the award including registration, lodging, poster printing, travel and food is $600. To be eligible for the competition, students must have an abstract for an oral or poster participation approved by NCUR. The deadline to submit an abstract is December 2, 2016. Ten students, whose abstracts have been accepted by NCUR, will be selected to give their oral or poster presentation and represent Indiana University at the conference. Selected students will travel with IU chaperones and be expected to share hotel rooms. Five awards will be allocated to juniors and seniors and five to freshmen and sophomores.

Eligibility criteria and submission timeline:

-          Abstract accepted by NCUR. Forward email from NCUR to engageiu@indiana.edu

-          Will be enrolled full time as an undergraduate student at IU Bloomington at the time of the conference (April 6-8, 2017).  The office of Engaged Learning will confirm enrollment status.

-          Applicant statement for internal selection submitted by February 13, 2017. (Note that this is a new deadline.) Submit a statement (maximum 500 words) as a Word document by email to engageiu@indiana.edu. Your statement should address the following points: 

  • Your motivations for pursuing their research or creative activity.
  • How you expect to benefit from participating in the trip and presenting at the conference.

Timeline of competition and trip:

December 2, 2016 – Deadline to submit abstract to NCUR: Link to abstract submission guidelines

December 3, 2016 – January 23, 2017 – NCUR reviews submissions.

February 13, 2017 - Deadline to submit statement for internal selection. 

April 6 – 8, 2017 – IU students and staff travel to Memphis, TN. The conference takes place over 2½ days from Thursday April 6 to Saturday April 8. Tentative plans are to leave the morning of April 6 and return the evening of Saturday April 8.
